Abuja — Questions have continued to emerge over the reported financial expenditure surrounding the just-concluded Osun State Governorship Election, with claims circulating that more than N60 billion may have been expended by a political party during the election.
Reacting to the reports, an SDP Senatorial Candidate for Kogi East in the 2027 elections, HK, questioned whether the massive deployment of financial resources ultimately translated into genuine political support.
“Did money not fail?” he asked, challenging the assumption that financial strength alone can determine electoral outcomes.
According to him, the deeper lesson from the election is that while money can influence people, it cannot purchase genuine goodwill.
«“When the people believe in you, trust your leadership and can point to your impact, you do not need to wait until election day to buy their support.”»
HK argued that political capital built over time through service, sacrifice and meaningful impact remains more valuable than financial inducements deployed during election periods.
He maintained that genuine goodwill cannot be bought, regardless of the amount of money available to a political party or candidate.
“Goodwill built through service and sacrifice is a political capital no amount of money can replace or buy,” he said.
The comments have added to the broader conversation over the role of money in Nigerian elections and whether sustained grassroots engagement, credibility and demonstrable leadership are becoming more decisive factors in determining electoral support.
